Be supposed to 의미, 활용법 (Feat. 구슬쌤)

 

1. 예정되어 있는 가까운 계획 be supposed to. (하지만 꼭 그렇게 된다는 보장은 없음)
--If you say that something is supposed to happen, you mean that it is planned or expected.
--Sometimes this use suggests that the thing does not really happen in this way.

I'm supposed to meet my friend 친구 만나기로 했어요
I'm going to meet my friend 친구 만날 거예요.

I'm supposed to meet Ralph downtown.
Ralph를 만나기로 했어요.

 

 

2. 예정된 날씨에 be supposed to (하지만 꼭 그렇게 될 거란 보장은 없음)

It's supposed to rain today. 오늘 비온다고 하더라.
It's supposed to snow today. 오늘 눈 온다고 하더라.

It's supposed to be hot today. 오늘 덥다고 하더라.
It's supposed to be cold early next week. 다음주 초에 춥다고 하더라.

 

 

3. 보통은 원래 ~하기로 되어있다는 걸 리마인드 해주며 가볍게 조언/경고할 때

Come on, Seul. You're not supposed to do that.
에이, 슬아. 원래 그럼 안되는 거잖아.

(You're) not supposed to smoke in here.
원래 여기서 담배피시면 안돼요

I don't think you're supposed to do that.
원래 그러면 안되는 것 같은데

 

 

4. was/were supposed to (결국 안 일어난 일) ~하기로 되어 있었어 / ~하기로 했었어
If something was supposed to happen, it was planned or intended to happen, but did not in fact happen.

I was supposed to hang out with my friends, but I was too tired.
원래 친구랑 놀기로 했는데 너무피곤해서 (안 만난 상황)

I was supposed to study English, but I was too busy.
원래 영어 공부를 할려고 했는데 너무나 바빴어(못한 상황)

See, this was supposed to be easy and fun.
원래는 쉽고 재미있어야 하지만 결국 그렇지 않음

We were supposed to meet for lunch, but he did not show.
같이 만나서 점심 먹기로 했는데 결국 상대가 안 옴

 

 

5. 답답하고 짜증날 때 쉽게 쓸 수 있는 be supposed to의 의문문 (~하기로 되어 있는거야? / ~해야 하는거야?)

Where am I supposed to go?
(원래) 어디로 가야 되는거야? (마음의 소리 : 아, 도대체 어디로 가라는 거야?!)

What am I supposed to do?
(원래)내가 뭘 하기로 되어있는 거야?/뭘 해야 되는 거야? (마음의 소리: 아, 나보고 도대체 뭘 어쩌라는 거야?)

What's that supposed to mean?
(상대의 말/행동이 믿기지 않을 때) 그건 무슨 의미로 한 말/행동이야? (마음의 소리: 그게 무슨 뚱딴지야…)
